Be the Reason that a Child Succeeds. Volunteer Today!
Now Recruiting Mentors/Tutors
Mentoring/Tutoring- For many students today, learning requires
more than the traditional classroom can provide. Students, who for
a number of reasons, have fallen behind their peers and may be at-risk
of dropping out, need more individual attention. Victoria Independent
School District (VISD) has implemented the Mentoring/Tutoring Program.
The VBEC (Business and Education Together) Team is currently
recruiting volunteers to assist needy students with either reading
or math. Special mentoring labs have been established at five local
campuses, and expert teachers have been employed to assure the success
of the students. Area businesses are encouraged to participate by
allowing their employees one half hour of leave time per week to
volunteer. Mentoring is defined as a structured relationship between
a youth and an adult in which the adult offers support, guidance,
tutoring, and encouragement for the young person to move forward
in fulfilling his/her potential.
To date, VISD volunteers have donated over 7,000 thirty minute sessions
to assist local students. One hundred percent of the third grade
students who were in the mentoring/tutoring program passed the state
required standarized test! Eighty-four percent
of the students who were enrolled in the program at Memorial High
School Stroman Campus passed the math portion of the standardized test.
